Welcome home!
Luwawa Forest Lodge is located in the Viphya Mountains in Northern Malawi, a pleasant and malaria free climate, at 1,560m above sea level.
The Lodge is ideally situated in the beautiful and tranquil Luwawa Valley, a stone’s throw away from Luwawa Dam which is well stocked with fish including wide mouthed bream.
We offer a variety of accommodation including family chalets, self catering cottages, budget rooms, a hostel and a campsite. An à la carte menu is served at the Lodge with delicious home cooked meals accompanied by vegetables from our own permaculture garden. Our bread is also freshly home baked. Vegetarian food is also one of our specialities.
The Lodge has been operating for 25 years and specialises in outdoor adventure tourism with a variety of activities on offer.
A little history...
Luwawa Rest House, as it was known, was originally built in 1984. It was built as a clubhouse for senior engineers, who were building the ‘new road’ (MI), through the Viphya Mountains to Mzuzu. On the completion of the road, the buildings were handed over to the Malawi Government, who ran it as a Government rest house for 14 years. On 5 January 1998 it was taken over by Luwawa Forest Enterprises Ltd. as part of the Government’s privatisation scheme. At that point, the Lodge only had 4 employees, whereas now there are 24 employees.
The Lodge has established all aspects of outdoor adventure activity, whilst at the same time remaining an environmentally friendly development. The Lodge has worked hard to promote local schemes to help the local people develop new skills and find different ways of supporting themselves. In 2009 The Luwawa Environmental Trust was officially established to help local people with with sustainable management of the forests around the Luwawa area. The Trust plans to open an environmental education centre for use by local schools and tourists alike.
