Saving the forest
The Luwawa Environmental Trust (LET) has been active in environmental conservation since 2001 but was only formally registered as a Malawian Government Charitable Trust in 2009.
For the last two decades the LET vision was to assist the Malawian Government’s Forestry Department with the long-term environmental conservation of the Perekezi and South Viphya Forest Reserves and to improve the sustainable management of these Malawian forests.
Knowing that the environment cannot be protected and nurtured without the interest and involvement of the local communities, LET actively encouraged an exchange of knowledge providing relevant environmental education and support. Proactively spreading the conservation message with demonstrations of best practice and alternatives to the detriment of the forests.
Over the last couple of years the culmination of the Trust’s vision has come to fruition and LET is entering a new phase. The Trust is now the guardian of 137 hectares of the South Viphya Forest Reserve . . . . the Luwawa Environmental Protection Zone (LEPZ), one of the first formal protection Zones within Malawi. In addition, LET is in the middle of establishing the Luwawa Centre for Environmental Education on the shore of the Luwawa Dam within the LEPZ.
The Trust relies heavily on well-wisher donation so please feel free to contact us if you wish to donate. If you would like to volunteer to assist on one of our projects or get involved with our fundraisers such as the International MTB Marathon Race, get in touch today.
education is key
Education is key and the primary objective of the Luwawa Centre for Environmental Education is to help Malawian school children to appreciate their own natural resources and help them understand the importance of sustainable management of those resources. We cannot expect this generation to take responsibility for something they may never have experienced or understand what the benefits are.
The Centre therefore wants to encourage understanding of the link to climate change and how this can affect them and their families. We also aim to educate visitors on what they can do to mitigate risks for their future, and generations to come.
